♻ Small Steps Towards Sustainability

Small Steps Towards Sustainability

At Lucky Clucks, we believe sustainability doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t need acres of land or lots of animals to make a difference – small, everyday changes really do add up.

When we talk to visiting schools and families, one of the biggest messages we share is this: start where you are. Even the tiniest steps help protect our planet for future generations.

🌱 Grow Something – Anything

You don’t need a garden to grow food. A windowsill herb pot, a recycled yoghurt pot with seeds, or a hanging basket outside can all bring nature closer to home. Growing your own food helps us understand where it comes from and reduces packaging waste.

♻ Reduce Waste

Simple swaps can make a big impact:

  • Use reusable water bottles

  • Take a bag when shopping

  • Choose loose fruit and veg

  • Repurpose jars and containers

At the smallholding, we’re always finding new ways to reuse materials instead of throwing them away.

🐔 Food Waste = Chicken Treats

Our hens love safe food scraps (like veg peelings and leftover greens). It’s a great way to reduce waste and teach children about natural food cycles. Always check what’s safe before feeding animals.

🌼 Help Nature Thrive

Planting wildflowers, creating bug hotels or leaving part of your garden a little wild can support bees, butterflies and birds. Even a single plant can help pollinators.

🌍 Save Energy

Small habits matter:

  • Turn off lights

  • Dry clothes outside

  • Unplug chargers

These steps help reduce your carbon footprint without costing a penny

Meet our rescue hens

It All Begins Here

Meet Our Rescue Hens

At Lucky Clucks, our rescue hens are more than just farm animals – they’re little survivors with big personalities.

When they first arrived, many of our girls were nervous, featherless and unsure of the world around them. Coming from commercial settings, they had never felt grass under their feet or sunshine on their backs. Some were scared of people, others simply stood still, not knowing what freedom looked like.

But slowly… everything changed.

From Shy to Sassy

With time, care and lots of patience, our hens began to blossom. Feathers grew back, confidence appeared and personalities shone through.

We quickly learned:

  • One is the bossy leader

  • One steals treats when you’re not looking

  • One follows us everywhere like a tiny feathery shadow

Each hen is unique, and that’s what makes them so special.

Why Rescue Matters

Rescuing hens gives them a second chance at life. Watching them scratch, dust bathe and sun themselves for the first time reminds us why this work matters so much.

For visiting school groups, meeting our hens opens up important conversations about:

  • Where food comes from

  • Animal welfare

  • Kindness and responsibility

  • Making compassionate choices

Children often leave with a new respect for animals and a deeper understanding of how their choices impact the world.

More Than Just Chickens

Our hens help teach:

  • Patience

  • Compassion

  • Respect for living beings

Seeing a nervous hen slowly learn to trust again is powerful – for children and adults alike.

Final Thoughts

Every hen at Lucky Clucks has a story.
A story of second chances.
A story of care.
A story of hope.

We’re proud to give them the life they deserve – and even prouder to share them with our community.

School Visits at Lucky Clucks

At Lucky Clucks, we believe the best learning happens outside the classroom. Our smallholding offers children a chance to connect with animals, nature and each other in a hands-on, meaningful way.

From the moment school groups arrive, curiosity takes over. There are questions to ask, animals to meet and plenty to discover. Every visit is filled with smiles, laughter and learning.

Learning Through Experience

Our sessions are designed to support the curriculum while keeping things fun and engaging. Children learn about:

  • Animal welfare and care

  • Where food comes from

  • Sustainability and the environment

  • Responsibility and teamwork

Feeding the hens, collecting eggs and learning how to care for animals helps children understand the importance of kindness and respect for living creatures.

Building Confidence & Compassion

We see incredible changes during our visits. Some children arrive feeling unsure, but by the end of the day they’re confidently holding animals, asking thoughtful questions and supporting their classmates.

Working with animals teaches:

  • Patience

  • Empathy

  • Communication

  • Confidence

For many children, it’s the first time they’ve been this close to farm animals – and it’s a moment they’ll never forget.

A Safe & Welcoming Space

Lucky Clucks is a calm, inclusive environment where every child is encouraged to take part at their own pace. We proudly welcome:

  • Mainstream schools

  • SEN groups

  • Home education groups

  • Youth organisations

Our aim is to ensure every visitor feels safe, supported and valued.

Why Teachers Love Visiting

Teachers often tell us how valuable our visits are because they:

✔ Reinforce classroom learning
✔ Support emotional wellbeing
✔ Encourage curiosity
✔ Create lasting memories

We provide a relaxed, structured session that allows children to learn through doing – something they’ll talk about long after they leave.

Final Thoughts

School visits aren’t just about animals – they’re about connection, confidence and compassion. Watching children grow in confidence while caring for our animals reminds us why we do what we do.

Why we became a community interest company

Why We Became a Community Interest Company (C.I.C)

Lucky Clucks started with a simple idea – to create a place where people and animals could thrive together.

What began as a smallholding quickly grew into something bigger than we ever imagined. We saw how powerful animal connection could be, not just for education, but for wellbeing, confidence and community support.

Putting People & Animals First

Becoming a Community Interest Company allows us to place purpose before profit. Every decision we make is guided by our mission:

  • To care for animals with compassion

  • To support children and families

  • To provide safe, inclusive learning experiences

  • To give back to our community

This structure ensures all profits go straight back into animal care, facilities and community projects.

Supporting Our Community

As a C.I.C, we proudly work with:

  • Schools and home education groups

  • SEN children and young people

  • Families

  • Vulnerable adults

  • Local community organisations

Our smallholding offers a calm, welcoming environment where everyone can learn at their own pace.

More Than Education

For many visitors, Lucky Clucks is more than a farm visit. It’s a place to:

  • Build confidence

  • Develop social skills

  • Find calm

  • Experience kindness and connection

Animals have a wonderful way of helping people feel safe and understood.

Transparency & Trust

Choosing C.I.C status means we are accountable and transparent. It shows our supporters and funders that we are committed to:

✔ Community benefit
✔ Ethical practice
✔ Long-term impact

Looking Ahead

Our journey is just beginning. We have big dreams for Lucky Clucks – more animals, more educational programmes and more opportunities to support our community.

Becoming a C.I.C gives us the foundation to grow responsibly while staying true to our values.
