Who I Am and Why I Do This

Hello, my name is Georgina Watson, the founder of Lucky Clucks Smallholding C.I.C. I grew up in Bristol and moved to Torbay in 2003 when my family relocated to support my younger sister, Madeline, who was severely disabled. I spent much of my childhood as an unrecognised young carer—an experience that shaped who I am today. Caring for Madeline meant that parts of my education and childhood were affected, and my confidence struggled to grow. However, I always believed that supporting my family was simply what love and responsibility looked like.

I remained closely involved in Madeline’s care into adulthood, until stepping back while attending university. I went on to complete two degrees and become a qualified nurse—a role I still proudly work full-time alongside running this organisation.

Following the heart-breaking loss of Madeline in 2019, and the passing of other close family members shortly after, I felt adrift. My children had grown and begun their own lives, and then the pandemic changed the world for us all. During this time of reflection, I rediscovered a childhood passion: horses. In 2020, I brought my horse Poppy, and soon after, with the support of a wonderful local family who offered me land, I began building a smallholding as a personal source of healing and purpose.

Over the past five years, nature and animal care helped me reconnect with myself—and I realised I wanted others to experience the same sense of peace, growth, and joy. This inspiration led to the creation of Lucky Clucks Smallholding C.I.C—a community-focused, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting Torbay’s young carers, unpaid carers, and individuals experiencing mental health challenges, loneliness, or isolation. We offer a safe, friendly environment along side the river Dart where people can relax, feel valued, and enjoy meaningful moments outdoors with animals.

I feel Madeline’s presence here every day. We were always outdoors together as children, and the smallholding feels like a continuation of that bond. Seeing people of all ages smile, connect, and find comfort here means so much. The purple in our logo is a tribute to Madeline—her favourite colour, and a reminder that she remains a part of everything we do.

Thank you for supporting our mission and being part of our community.

Warmly,
Georgina
